The work of one of California's preeminent painters, Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920), is brought to life in a new retrospective, Wayne Thiebaud: 70 Years of Painting, on view at the Pasadena Museum of California Art from October 4, 2009 - January 31, 2010.
Included in the exhibition are many of the self-taught artist's sketches, drawings, and studies, revealing his immense skill at draftsmanship, which he believed to be the foundation of painting. In addition, they evidence his abiding interest in master painters such as Manet and Velasquez, surprising antecessors for Thiebaud’s Pop style. With the artist’s charcoal drawings displayed in a discrete space, viewers will have the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in Thiebaud’s unadulterated experiments with line and form, exercises which serve as the origins of his celebrated paintings.
